TRANS DOLOMITES MTB ENDURO, ITALY

The mountain landscape of the Dolomites has an unmatched beauty, with spectacular peaks and immense, vertical limestone walls that give way beautifully to contrasting woodlands, wide mountain meadows and lush green pastures in the lower valleys. For decades an inspiration for the local population, geologists, artists, travellers, adventurers and alpinists, the Dolomites are also a great playground also for mountain bikers, having well earned their reputation as a world class biking area with excellent access, wilderness logistics, well used singletrack trails and an extensive chairlift network.

This advanced level trip is the result years of research and trail finding from local MTB guide and Dolomites expert Andreas Tonelli and is guided either by Andreas himself or one of a small team of highly qualified Singletrack Nomads experts. The tour comprises of a traverse of the whole mountain massif from west to east over 4 full-on, intensive biking days, complimented with 2 extra days enduro riding centre based in Val Gardena.

Trans Dolomites Enduro MTB Information

The programme is true to its grass roots enduro style, with rugged and challenging high alpine riding along mind-blowing trails amidst breathtaking landscapes. We start from Selva di Val Gardena on the west of the range and end in San Candido to the east, passing trough Val Gardena, Val di Fassa, Marmolada, Alleghe, Cortina d’Ampezzo, 3 Cime di Lavaredo and the Sextner Dolomites.

Using chair lifts on 5 out of the 6 riding days, we gain height easily and are able to average over 3,000 downhill meters per day, adding up to an unbelievable total of over 18,000m over the course of the week! Thanks to the many lifts and just a few well placed shuttles, climbing is kept to a minimum and is always along epic single trails. Spectacular rides on mountain crests, breath-taking downhill adrenaline rushes and amazing views over the most beautiful mountain range in the world are only part of the picture, and after the physical efforts on the mountain bike, we are rewarded with traditional culinary delights, charming mountain refuges and comfortable four star hotels.

The tour is not for beginner mountain bikers but is well suited to advanced, adventurous riders. We need to carry our own kit for four days during the traverse, and although a 25l backpack should be sufficient given the good facilities available at the refuges, a good level of fitness and on bike training will be rewarded. Trails are challenging at times with considerable loose and rocky sections, steeps and some exposure. There are also hike-a-bike sections on this trip so participants must have good walking footwear and be able to carry their bikes.

The tour starts and finishes in Val Gardena and the airport transfer to here is not included in the package, so you have more flexibility in choosing your approach. The nearest airports are Innsbruck, Austria (120km / 2 hours) and Verona (200km / 2.5 hours), although many people arrive from Munich, Germany (300km / 4 hours) where a winder range of flights (including more budget options). There are a range of private, scheduled and public bus / train options available. Contact us for group rates, and to network with other riders.

ITINERARY

Arrival and transfer to Val Gardena. We meet at 19.00 at the very comfortable Hotel Astor in Selva di Val Gardena- the gateway to the Dolomites. We have a good dinner here, a full briefing, and get to know each other. The next 2 days biking will be centred here, building up to our “great traverse” of the high range.
Overnight Hotel Astor / Meals included- dinner

Our first day’s ride is a circular route in the valley system of Gardena, giving us a chance to warm up, get used to the trails, and work on some skills training that will be very helpful in the coming days. The site of the high peaks above will get the excitement flowing, and the well earned rocky downhills serve as a fine taster of the epic descents still to come. Lunch is at a very nice mountain cafe. No lift assistance on this day- we need to get the legs working!

Today we stay in the Val Gardena area, but begin our 5 days of unlimited uplift services. The lifts mean we can climb faster and more easily, getting in many more KM’s of first class singletrack and enduro trails. Lunch again is at a charming, authentic cafe. The riding is first class, and this evening’s cold beers will well reward the concentration and focus of the day!

Today we set out on a 4-day long epic trans of the Dolomites massif, heading for some of the most beautiful mountain peaks and trails of the Val Gardena region. For the nest 4 days we must carry only essentials, as the refuges where we overnight do not have support vehicle access. However, facilities are good, so a 25l backpack is normally sufficient. Making an early start, we ride gently downwards to the village of Ortisei and from here start our adventure down to Val di Fassa. After lunch, we take a cable car up the mountain and climb 500m to the spectacular Rifugio Viel dell Pan (2,500m) with epic views of Marmolada, at 3,300m the highest peak in the Dolomites. Tonight’s cuisine is unreal, and the whole experience of Refuge Vieldalpan is one of the highlights of the trip!

Another big day featuring almost 3,500 m in descent, a few great climbs and amazing mountain landscapes. The Bindelweg leads us down to Alleghe- an endlessly winding and rolling singletrack that contours above 2400m for over 2 hours. Here we enjoy the trails around one of the most iconic mountains of the Dolomites: the Civetta. The last mind-blowing descent leads us down to Caprile where we take a private shuttle bus and then a chair lift up to Averau Refuge, a Gourmet-Hut with a wine list that rivals big city restaurants and a delicious multi-course dinner (all included of course!). Oh, and unforgettable views to Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Tofana and Cristallo mountains: www.rifugioaverau.com.

The day begins with an amazing 1,500 m singletrack descent to the the Cinque Torri and further down to Cortina d’Ampezzo, with truly spectacular views! Of course we need to take a stroll down the beautiful pedestrian-only main street before catching the Freccia nel Cielo cable-car. After a hike-a-bike section, one of the finest descents of the entire Dolomites is awaiting us: just mind-blowing! Back in Cortina we take another lift followed by a shuttle ride up to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, also called the Drei Zinnen (German, literally “three merlons”). These three distinctive battlement-like peaks, in the Sexten Dolomites, are probably one of the best-known mountain groups in the Alps! After a 50 minute climb / hike-a-bike section we reach our tonight’s “rifugio”, one of the most romantic mountain huts of the Dolomites: the family run Büllelejoch Hütte. The homemade dinner is delicious!
Overnight Büllelejoch Hütte / Meals included- breakfast and dinner

After a hearty breakfast it’s a quick early bird uphill to reach the impressive 800 m high north face of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. The view in the morning sun here is truly breathtaking! An extraordinary panorama and a big and technical singletrack descent awaits us , depositing us 1,500 m lower in the Valley of Sexten. The rest of the day is dedicated to some epic downhills on the trails surrounding Sexten: a fantastic last day of riding in the Dolomites! In the afternoon we roll down to San Candido, one of the most beautiful villages of the Dolomites, where we take the train and later on a shuttle back to Val Gardena. Overnight again at Hotel Astor in Selva di Val Gardena.

GOOD TO KNOW...

Video

About the Area:
Val Gardena is a UNESCO World Heritage area of the Dolomites- a pristine mountain area that form part of Italy’s South Tyrol. The romantic vision of alpine beauty is true to it’s roots here, with untouched high pastures that are home to eagle owls and rock ptarmigans. But it’s the pale Dolomite limestone that gave these mountains their name and these sheer, epic cliff faces will be what you remember the most. Certainly, Val Gardena opens up new horizons in terms of mountain landscapes and is one of the most incredible areas of the Alps.

Grade:
The technical ability required for the ‘Dolomites W-E Enduro Traverse’ is rated as ‘advanced and above.’ In other words, the trails are challenging at times with considerable loose and rocky sections, steeps and some exposure. There are also hike-a-bike sections on this trip; participants must have good walking footwear and be able to carry their bikes. For fitness level, riders must be very fit. All participants must train accordingly to fully enjoy this trip.

Equipment advice:
This tour is best on a trail, all mountain or enduro full suspension mountain bike- contact us for hire options. Tyres must be big, grippy and tough, ideally tubeless with good quality sealant. Pads are a good idea.

Cable Cars and shuttles:
3 Shuttles, 20+ Cable Cars. This tour is self-assisted, that means every biker has to carry his equipment in his backpack. As the second hut has washing machines and dryers, we can travel light reducing the equipment to the very basics. A 25l backpack is enough for this trip.

Accommodation:
3 nights are spent in idyllic, authentic mountain huts on the traverse Tour, 4 nights are in a 4 stars hotel at the start and end of the trip. Catering is half board with a generous breakfast buffet for bikers and a traditional dinner.

Flights:
The tour starts and finishes in Val Gardena, in the Italian Dolomites. Transfer to here is not included in the tour. Plenty of info available on this webpage: http://www.transfertovalgardena.com/en/airplane/
Contact us for advice and tips!

Lift pass:
The tour requires you to purchase a “5 days from 7” Val Gardena lift pass at a cost of roughly 145 Euro (not included in the tour). As the name suggests, this gives you unrestricted access for 5 days in any 7. So we can use the lifts for 5 out of the 6 riding days. The second day of warm up rides around Val Gardena will be solely pedal powered!
